Cet article met en évidence le rôle de la terminologie, telle que camouflage et masquage, couramment utilisée dans la recherche sur l’autisme. L’auteur suggère que les chercheurs remettent en question les présupposés liés au langage couramment employé afin de vérifier qu’il représente pleinement la position autistique. Être autiste signifie souvent être très littéral. Cette littéralité signifie qu’il est très important que les chercheurs, en particulier les chercheurs non autistes, conçoivent les questions de recherche de manière à recueillir des informations exactes qui sous-tendent souvent la compréhension autistique. Les mots sont des outils puissants et conduisent aux croyances et aux positions adoptées. Le morphisme adaptatif dans l’autisme (actuellement désigné comme camouflage ou masquage) implique une réponse qui n’est pas de la tromperie, mais qui est biologique et pas nécessairement choisie. L’auteur de cet article suggère que le masquage, en tant que choix de tromper, est très différent du morphisme adaptatif pour la sécurité.
