Environ 3 à 4 garçons pour chaque fille répondent aux critères cliniques de l’autisme dans les études sur les schémas diagnostiques communautaires et les études sur l’autisme utilisant des échantillons de convenance. Cependant, il a été émis l’hypothèse que les filles autistes sont sous-diagnostiquées, peut-être parce qu’elles peuvent présenter des profils symptomatiques différents de ceux des garçons. Cette analyse secondaire de données a utilisé la National Database of Autism Research (NDAR) pour examiner comment le sexe et les profils symptomatiques sont associés l’un à l’autre dans une évaluation de référence des symptômes de l’autisme, l’Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule II (ADOS-II; Lord, C., Luyster, R., Guthrie, W., & Pickles A. Les scores ADOS-II de 6183 enfants âgés de 6 à 14 ans issus de 78 études différentes dans la NDAR ont indiqué que le sexe était un prédicteur significatif des scores de sévérité du total de l’algorithme, des comportements restrictifs et répétitifs, et des difficultés de communication sociale. Ces résultats suggèrent que les différences entre les sexes dans les scores ADOS sont fréquentes dans de nombreux échantillons et peuvent avoir des implications pour les pratiques diagnostiques actuelles.
