Résumé Les personnes autistes présentent souvent des difficultés à ajuster leur comportement de manière flexible, mais les expériences en laboratoire ont produit des résultats incohérents, potentiellement en raison de divers facteurs d’influence nécessitant un examen précis. Cette étude visait à examiner l’hypothèse selon laquelle le contenu social des stimuli pourrait jouer un rôle spécifique dans certains des défis de flexibilité auxquels sont confrontées les personnes autistes. Nous avons analysé les données de 256 participants adultes (dont 124 avec autisme), appariés selon l’âge, le genre et le sexe, qui ont réalisé une tâche de changement émotionnel impliquant des alternances imprévisibles entre des stimuli positifs et négatifs. En outre, la tâche comportait une condition sociale et une condition non sociale. Nos résultats ont révélé un coût de changement plus important dans la condition sociale que dans la condition non sociale, plus prononcé dans l’autisme que chez les personnes non autistes. S’appuyant sur des recherches antérieures montrant un coût de changement plus élevé chez les personnes autistes que chez les personnes non autistes pour des stimuli socio-émotionnels, notre étude étend davantage ces résultats en soulignant que le contexte social, plutôt que la seule nature émotionnelle des stimuli, pourrait jouer un rôle particulier dans certains des défis de flexibilité auxquels sont confrontées les personnes autistes. Néanmoins, d’autres études sont nécessaires afin de déterminer si ces résultats s’appliquent également aux enfants autistes ou aux personnes autistes présentant également des déficiences intellectuelles.
