Résumé

CONTEXTE : Les personnes sur le spectre de l’autisme sont décrites depuis longtemps comme traitant les informations sensorielles différemment des personnes neurotypiques. Bien que de nombreux efforts aient été déployés pour caractériser et étudier la neurobiologie sous-jacente aux différences sensorielles de l’autisme, on constate un manque notable de cohérence dans les termes utilisés pour décrire la nature de ces différences. CORPS DU TEXTE : Nous soutenons que l’utilisation incohérente et interchangeable de la terminologie pour décrire les différences sensorielles de l’autisme est devenue problématique au-delà de la simple pédanterie et de l’inconvénient. Nous commençons par mettre en évidence des termes populaires actuellement utilisés pour décrire les différences sensorielles de l’autisme (p. ex., « sensibilité », « réactivité » et « responsivité ») et examinons pourquoi une nomenclature inadéquate peut entraver les efforts visant à comprendre l’étiologie des différences sensorielles dans l’autisme. Nous apportons ensuite une solution à l’utilisation inadéquate de la terminologie en proposant une taxonomie hiérarchique pour décrire et désigner diverses caractéristiques sensorielles. CONCLUSION : L’utilisation incohérente de la terminologie pour décrire les caractéristiques sensorielles de l’autisme a étouffé la discussion et la compréhension scientifique des différences sensorielles de l’autisme. La taxonomie hiérarchique proposée a été élaborée pour aider à résoudre le manque de clarté lors de la discussion des différences sensorielles de l’autisme et pour situer les futures cibles de recherche à des niveaux d’analyse appropriés.

BACKGROUND: Individuals on the autism spectrum have been long described to process sensory information differently than neurotypical individuals. While much effort has been leveraged towards characterizing and investigating the neurobiology underlying the sensory differences of autism, there has been a notable lack of consistency in the terms being used to describe the nature of those differences. MAIN BODY: We argue that inconsistent and interchangeable terminology-use when describing the sensory differences of autism has become problematic beyond mere pedantry and inconvenience. We begin by highlighting popular terms that are currently being used to describe the sensory differences of autism (e.g. "sensitivity", "reactivity" and "responsivity") and discuss why poor nomenclature may hamper efforts towards understanding the aetiology of sensory differences in autism. We then provide a solution to poor terminology-use by proposing a hierarchical taxonomy for describing and referring to various sensory features. CONCLUSION: Inconsistent terminology-use when describing the sensory features of autism has stifled discussion and scientific understanding of the sensory differences of autism. The hierarchical taxonomy proposed was developed to help resolve lack of clarity when discussing the sensory differences of autism and to place future research targets at appropriate levels of analysis.
