Résumé

Cet article analyse deux vidéos réalisées par des auto-représentants autistes non parlants, In My Language (2007) de Mel Baggs et S/Pace d’Adam Wolfond et Estée Klar (2019), afin de souligner les manifestations plus-qu’humaines du récit. Mettant en scène des interactions incarnées avec des choses « inanimées » et prêtant attention aux propriétés physiques de la création artistique, les vidéos encouragent une approche dynamique et multiforme du récit, remettant en question les notions conventionnelles du texte comme de simples « mots sur une page ». Le posthumanisme et le nouveau matérialisme, qui considèrent l’existence comme intrinsèquement relationnelle, fournissent un cadre pertinent pour analyser ces œuvres en dehors des cadres cognitivistes et médicaux, lesquels pathologisent la dépendance et privilégient l’expression verbale. Compte tenu de la manière dont la théorie posthumaniste et le nouveau matérialisme ont remis en question l’autorité médicale et scientifique, S/Pace et In My Language sont mis en dialogue avec ces évolutions. En accordant une attention particulière aux techniques formelles et aux qualités structurelles, leur potentiel d’enrichissement de la critique posthumaniste, de diversification de la théorie narratologique et de dissociation de l’autisme du paradigme de la pathologie est examiné.

This article analyses two videos by nonspeaking autistic self-advocates, In My Language (2007) by Mel Baggs and S/Pace by Adam Wolfond and Estée Klar (2019), to underscore the more-than-human manifestations of narrative. Showcasing embodied interactions with ‘inanimate’ things and paying attention to the physical properties of artistic creation, the videos encourage a dynamic and multifaceted approach to narrative, challenging conventional notions of text as static ‘words on a page.’ Posthumanism and new materialism, regarding existence as inherently relational, provide a pertinent framework for analysing the works outside cognitivist and medical frameworks, which pathologize dependence and privilege verbal expression. Considering how posthumanist and new materialist theory has challenged medical and scientific authority, S/Pace and In My Language are placed in dialogue with these developments. With special attention to formal techniques and structural qualities, their potential to enrich posthumanist criticism, diversify narratological theory, and dissociate autism from the pathology paradigm is considered.
