Objective Compared to parents of non-autistic children, parents of autistic children experience increased stress and unique parenting challenges. Reports from parents on the types of supports they find helpful are scare. To date, no study of this type has been conducted among Australian mothers. The aim of the current study was to fill this gap.Method Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a community sample of nine Australian mothers of autistic children. Interview transcripts were analysed using qualitative thematic analysis to identify common themes. Results Reported supports included: connecting to other parents within the autistic community, family, professional, school and recreational support. Desired supports identified included: increased respite and access to childcare resources, increased opportunities for families to connect within the autistic community alongside increased access to recreational activities inclusive of autistic children. At a community and societal level, mothers expressed the importance of increasing awareness, advocacy and inclusion for autistic people in addition to streamlining and centralising services for families. Conclusion Identifying the supports that parents value and find most helpful is informative for families. Additionally, service providers and organisational bodies need to be informed by the voices and perspectives of parents and families when devising future initiatives.

Dernier calcul : 23/10/2026 07:41.
