Le trouble du spectre de l'autisme (TSA) est une affection neurodéveloppementale diagnostiquée sur le plan comportemental, dont la pathologie est inconnue. Les recherches suggèrent que des anomalies des oscillations gamma de l'électroencéphalogramme (EEG) pourraient fournir un biomarqueur de cette affection. Dans cette étude, l'analyse de l'enveloppe des formes d'onde démodulées pour les oscillations gamma évoquées et induites en réponse à des figures de Kanizsa dans une tâche oddball a été analysée et comparée chez 19 enfants présentant un TSA et 19 enfants neurotypiques appariés selon l'âge et le sexe. Le groupe TSA a été traité par stimulation magnétique transcrânienne (SMT) à basse fréquence (1,0 Hz, 90 % du seuil moteur, 18 séances hebdomadaires) ciblant le cortex préfrontal dorsolatéral. Chez les sujets présentant un TSA, comparativement aux sujets neurotypiques, des différences significatives dans les oscillations gamma évoquées et induites étaient évidentes, avec une amplitude plus élevée des oscillations gamma avant la SMT, particulièrement en réponse aux indices non cibles. Les enregistrements après le traitement par SMT chez les sujets présentant un TSA ont révélé une réduction significative des réponses gamma aux stimuli non pertinents pour la tâche. Les participants ont commis moins d'erreurs après la SMT. Les questionnaires comportementaux ont montré une diminution des scores d'irritabilité, d'hyperactivité et de comportements répétitifs. L'utilisation d'une nouvelle métrique pour les oscillations gamma, c'est-à-dire l'analyse de l'enveloppe utilisant la transformation en ondelettes, a permis de caractériser l'impédance du circuit neuronal d'origine. Les résultats suggèrent que les oscillations gamma pourraient fournir un biomarqueur reflétant l'équilibre excitateur/inhibiteur du cortex et une mesure de résultat putative pour les interventions dans l'autisme.
