Résumé

Les troubles restrictifs des conduites alimentaires (TCA) comptent parmi les troubles psychiatriques présentant les taux de mortalité les plus élevés. À ce jour, peu de recherches ont étudié le rôle des médias numériques dans le partage des expériences de TCA et la promotion du rétablissement chez les personnes autistes, malgré les taux élevés d’autisme parmi les personnes présentant des TCA et le potentiel des médias sociaux (MS) à fournir des ressources et du soutien aux adolescentes et aux jeunes femmes vivant avec des TCA. Compte tenu de cette lacune, nous avons entrepris une étude exploratoire afin d’évaluer les contenus relatifs aux difficultés des personnes autistes concernant l’alimentation et le fait de manger sur TikTok, l’application de MS dominante. Nous avons identifié quatre thèmes principaux : a) les TCA et l’autisme ; b) les dimensions cognitives, sensorielles et comportementales de l’alimentation et des problématiques corporelles chez les personnes autistes ; c) les aspects sociaux, culturels et économiques des difficultés alimentaires des personnes autistes ; et d) le rôle de TikTok, autodéclaré par les personnes autistes, dans leur adaptation aux difficultés liées à l’alimentation et au fait de manger. Notre étude apporte plusieurs résultats novateurs à la recherche sur les médias numériques, la santé mentale et les populations marginalisées.

Restrictive eating disorders (EDs) have among the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. To date, little research has investigated the role of digital media in sharing ED experiences and promoting recovery for autistic individuals, despite high autism rates among those with EDs and the potential for social media (SM) to provide resources and support for adolescent girls and young women living with EDs. Given this gap, we undertook an exploratory study to assess content pertaining to autistic people’s difficulties with food and eating on the leading SM app TikTok. We identified four main themes: (a) EDs and autism; (b) cognitive, sensory, and behavioral dimensions of autistic eating and body issues; (c) social, cultural, and economic aspects of autistic people’s food challenges; and (d) self-reported role of TikTok in autistic individuals’ coping with food/eating difficulties. Our study contributes several novel findings to research on digital media, mental health, and marginalized populations.
