Résumé La participation à des activités significatives (p. ex., loisirs, activités spirituelles, conditionnement physique) affecte considérablement la qualité de vie (QdV) des aidants, mais les déterminants de la participation chez les aidants d’enfants Autistes restent largement inconnus. La présente étude a examiné les corrélats chez l’enfant et l’aidant de la participation de l’aidant principal à des activités significatives. Cent six aidants principaux d’enfants Autistes (7-12 ans) ont été recrutés à partir de trois cohortes distinctes d’enfants Autistes dans cette étude transversale. Les aidants principaux ont rempli des questionnaires en ligne mesurant les écarts occupationnels (c.-à-d., les activités souhaitées auxquelles les aidants ne participent pas), la QdV, le stress parental, les résultats familiaux perçus et le soutien social. En plus de réaliser des évaluations directes de la cognition et du langage des enfants, les aidants principaux ont également fourni des informations sur le comportement adaptatif, les compétences socio-émotionnelles et la participation de leur enfant. Les aidants signalant moins d’écarts occupationnels (c.-à-d., ≤2 activités souhaitées) étaient plus susceptibles d’avoir des enfants Autistes sans affections concomitantes, plus âgés et présentant de meilleurs comportements adaptatifs, de meilleures compétences socio-émotionnelles ainsi qu’une participation plus fréquente à la maison et à l’école, comparativement aux aidants signalant de nombreux écarts (c.-à-d., ≥3 activités souhaitées). Les aidants présentant moins d’écarts occupationnels ont également signalé une meilleure QdV, un meilleur stress parental, un meilleur soutien social, une meilleure inclusivité communautaire perçue et de meilleurs résultats familiaux. L’analyse de régression logistique a identifié l’âge de l’enfant, le comportement adaptatif de l’enfant, les compétences socio-émotionnelles, la participation à la maison, ainsi que les résultats familiaux perçus et la QdV des aidants comme d’importants prédicteurs de leurs écarts occupationnels. Les résultats démontrent que la participation des aidants à des activités souhaitées était associée à une capacité fonctionnelle et une indépendance accrues de l’enfant, ainsi qu’à leur capacité perçue à répondre aux besoins de leur enfant. Soutenir le sentiment d’efficacité des parents pour répondre aux besoins de leurs enfants et développer leurs compétences et leurs connaissances permettra d’améliorer les résultats tant pour les aidants que pour les enfants.
