Résumé

Le trouble du spectre de l’autisme (TSA) est défini par des différences dans la communication sociale et des schémas restreints et répétitifs de comportements, d’intérêts ou d’activités. Les compétences et les difficultés peuvent changer selon les stimuli environnementaux, les soutiens et les facteurs de stress. La qualité de vie peut être améliorée par le recours à des aménagements, des technologies d’assistance, des thérapies visant à améliorer le fonctionnement adaptatif ou la communication, la formation des aidants, l’acceptation, l’accès et l’inclusion. Cet article porte sur l’identification du TSA chez les adultes, les orientations vers des services, la reconnaissance des affections associées, les stratégies et les aménagements visant à faciliter des services de soins primaires efficaces, ainsi que les questions éthiques liées aux soins des adultes autistes.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is defined by differences in social communication and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. Skills and challenges can change depending on environmental stimuli, supports, and stressors. Quality of life can be improved by the use of accommodations, assistive technologies, therapies to improve adaptive function or communication, caregiver training, acceptance, access, and inclusion. This article focuses on the identification of ASD in adults, referrals for services, the recognition of associated conditions, strategies and accommodations to facilitate effective primary care services, and ethical issues related to caring for autistic adults.
