Pendant la plus grande partie du vingtième siècle, l'autisme était considéré comme un trouble extrêmement rare, touchant une infime proportion de la population ; cependant, au cours des dernières décennies, le nombre de personnes diagnostiquées ou s'identifiant comme autistes a augmenté de manière exponentielle, avec des estimations de plus de 1 sur 100 (Brugha, 2012). L'autisme a été décrit de diverses manières, allant d'un esprit maléfique qui prive les parents de leurs enfants, à un style cognitif différent, voire à un atout fondamental pour l'évolution humaine. L'éventail des manières dont les personnes autistes peuvent se présenter aux praticiens de l'éducation et de la clinique est si vaste qu'il n'est peut-être guère étonnant que l'« énigme » (Frith, 1989) échappe encore aux descriptions simplistes, tandis que les scientifiques cherchent en vain ce qu'est exactement l'autisme. Bien que diverses tentatives aient été faites pour catégoriser différents sous-groupes du spectre de l'autisme, par exemple le « syndrome d'Asperger », l'« autisme de faible fonctionnement », l'« autisme atypique » ; il est très discutable de savoir avec quelle précision de telles distinctions peuvent être établies et quelle utilité elles ont dans la pratique.
