Résumé

L'empathie est essentielle au fonctionnement social et est pertinente pour un grand nombre de conditions cliniques. Cette revue COSMIN a évalué le soutien empirique aux mesures d'autoévaluation de l'empathie utilisées auprès d'adultes autistes et non autistes. Étant donné que l'autisme se caractérise par des différences sociales, il fait l'objet d'une proportion importante des recherches sur l'empathie. Par conséquent, cette revue utilise l'autisme comme prisme pour examiner la qualité psychométrique des mesures de l'empathie. Parmi les 19 mesures identifiées, cinq ont démontré des données probantes de « haute qualité » pour des propriétés « insuffisantes » et ne peuvent être recommandées. Les 14 restantes présentaient des lacunes notables dans les données probantes et nécessitent une évaluation supplémentaire avant d'être utilisées auprès de l'un ou l'autre groupe. En l'absence de tests d'invariance de mesure ou de fonctionnement différentiel des items, on ignore dans quelle mesure les différences observées entre les groupes représentent des différences réelles de traits. L'utilisation de l'autisme comme cas d'épreuve met en évidence une tendance alarmante à utiliser les mesures de l'empathie pour caractériser, et potentiellement dénigrer, des populations vulnérables avant une validation suffisante.

Empathy is essential for social functioning and is relevant to a host of clinical conditions. This COSMIN review evaluated the empirical support for empathy self-report measures used with autistic and nonautistic adults. Given autism is characterized by social differences, it is the subject of a substantial proportion of empathy research. Therefore, this review uses autism as a lens through which to scrutinize the psychometric quality of empathy measures. Of the 19 measures identified, five demonstrated “High-Quality” evidence for “Insufficient” properties and cannot be recommended. The remaining 14 had noteworthy gaps in evidence and require further evaluation before use with either group. Without tests of measurement invariance or differential item functioning, the extent to which observed group differences represent actual trait differences remains unknown. Using autism as a test case highlights an alarming tendency for empathy measures to be used to characterize, and potentially malign vulnerable populations before sufficient validation.
