L'attention sociale, y compris l'attention conjointe et l'orientation sociale, est essentielle à des interactions sociales positives. Bien que l'attention sociale visuelle précoce soit souvent quantifiée au moyen du suivi oculaire, ces indices peuvent ne pas refléter systématiquement l'engagement cognitif. L'attention soutenue définie par la fréquence cardiaque (HRDSA) est une mesure physiologique qui peut indiquer l'engagement cognitif parallèlement à l'attention visuelle, conduisant à des évaluations plus complètes des processus attentionnels qui sont particulièrement importantes chez les jeunes enfants neurodivers ayant des besoins de soutien élevés, y compris ceux présentant un autisme et un syndrome de l'X fragile (FXS). La présente étude a examiné les mesures visuelles et définies par la fréquence cardiaque de l'attention sociale à la tâche d'attention sociale sélective, une épreuve vidéo d'évaluation de l'attention sociale, chez des enfants présentant un autisme, un FXS et un développement neurotypique. Des modèles linéaires mixtes ont examiné les effets du groupe et de la condition sur plusieurs indices cardiaques et sur le regard global porté vers la scène. Les résultats suggèrent que, globalement, les enfants de tous les groupes se sont engagés de manière similaire tout au long de l'expérience dans la plupart des dimensions de la HRDSA et que, conformément aux travaux antérieurs, les enfants autistes ont consacré moins de temps à prêter visuellement attention à la scène que les enfants des deux autres groupes. La HRDSA était positivement associée à l'attention sociale visuelle. La combinaison de mesures physiologiques et de l'attention visuelle pourrait élucider la nature complexe de l'attention sociale et être particulièrement précieuse pour les enfants neurodivers lorsque les évaluations habituelles sont inaccessibles.
