Résumé
Le trouble du spectre de l'autisme (TSA) survient dans tous les groupes pediatriques raciaux, ethniques et demographiques. Cependant, les enfants noirs atteints de TSA sont diagnostiques a des stades plus tardifs de leur developpement et, par consequent, peuvent ne pas recevoir de services d'intervention precoce ou ne plus y etre admissibles en raison de leur age, et presenter de moins bons resultats a long terme selon divers facteurs. Les perceptions des parents afro-americains concernant l'acces aux services de sante et leur utilisation pour leurs enfants autistes varient. Les recherches examinant le trouble du spectre de l'autisme et les perceptions parentales de l'utilisation des services parmi les familles afro-americaines (AA) sont limitees. Cette etude qualitative visait a comprendre les difficultes auxquelles les parents afro-americains sont confrontes lorsqu'ils initient des services de sante pour leurs enfants autistes. Onze meres AA d'enfants autistes ont participe a des entretiens individuels semi-structures. Six themes lies aux besoins de traitement pediatrique, aux interactions avec les prestataires et aux roles des parents en tant qu'experts et defenseurs ont ete degages. Les implications pour les besoins de traitement pediatrique des enfants autistes et les possibilites offertes aux prestataires travaillant avec des enfants autistes AA sont examinees.
