Résumé

Resume Le syndrome d'Asperger est un trouble du developpement diagnostique relativement recent au sein du spectre autistique. Les enfants et les adultes atteints du syndrome d'Asperger ont des capacites intellectuelles se situant dans la norme, mais, en raison de leur profil inhabituel de capacites cognitives, sociales et emotionnelles, ils sont vulnerables au developpement d'un trouble de l'humeur secondaire. Cet article fournit une explication des capacites associees au syndrome d'Asperger, ainsi que des adaptations de la therapie cognitivo-comportementale (TCC) pour ce groupe de patients tres inhabituel. En particulier, l'article souligne l'importance de l'education affective pour cette population clinique et decrit une nouvelle strategie utilisee dans la restructuration cognitive, a savoir la boite a outils emotionnelle. L'article se termine par une breve description d'une etude d'evaluation en cours portant sur l'efficacite de la TCC pour traiter l'anxiete et la colere chez les enfants atteints du syndrome d'Asperger. Toutefois, les strategies decrites dans cet article peuvent egalement etre utilisees avec des adultes atteints du syndrome d'Asperger et appliquees a d'autres populations cliniques.

Abstract Asperger's syndrome is a relatively newly diagnosed developmental disorder within the autistic spectrum. Children and adults with Asperger's syndrome have an intellectual ability within the normal range but due to their unusual profile of cognitive, social and emotional abilities are vulnerable to the development of a secondary mood disorder. This paper provides an explanation of the abilities associated with Asperger's syndrome, and modifications to cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for this very unusual client group. In particular, the paper emphasises the importance of affective education for this clinical population and describes a new strategy used in cognitive restructuring, namely, the emotional toolbox. The paper concludes with a brief description of a current evaluation study of the effectiveness of CBT to treat anxiety and anger in children who have Asperger's syndrome. However, the strategies described in this paper can also be used with adults with Asperger's syndrome and applied to other clinical populations.
