Résumé

Le Short Sensory Profile (SSP) est l’une des mesures les plus couramment utilisées des caractéristiques sensorielles chez les enfants présentant un trouble du spectre de l’autisme (TSA), mais les études psychométriques dans cette population sont limitées. À l’aide d’une analyse factorielle confirmatoire, nous avons évalué la validité structurelle des sous-échelles du SSP chez des enfants présentant un TSA. Les modèles factoriels confirmatoires ont présenté un mauvais ajustement, et une analyse factorielle exploratoire de suivi a suggéré une structure à 9 facteurs qui n’a répliqué que trois des sept sous-échelles originales. Des analyses secondaires suggèrent que, bien que fiable, le score total du SSP est substantiellement biaisé par les différences individuelles sur des dimensions autres que le facteur général. Globalement, nos résultats déconseillent l’utilisation du score total du SSP et de la plupart des scores de sous-échelles chez les enfants présentant un TSA. Les implications pour les recherches futures sont examinées.

The Short Sensory Profile (SSP) is one of the most commonly used measures of sensory features in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but psychometric studies in this population are limited. Using confirmatory factor analysis, we evaluated the structural validity of the SSP subscales in ASD children. Confirmatory factor models exhibited poor fit, and a follow-up exploratory factor analysis suggested a 9-factor structure that only replicated three of the seven original subscales. Secondary analyses suggest that while reliable, the SSP total score is substantially biased by individual differences on dimensions other than the general factor. Overall, our findings discourage the use of the SSP total score and most subscale scores in children with ASD. Implications for future research are discussed.
