CONTEXTE : On ne sait pas pourquoi les enfants atteints de troubles du spectre de l'autisme (TSA) tendent à être inattentifs au contact visuel, voire à l'éviter. Le but de cette étude était d'examiner les réponses cérébrales affectivo-motivationnelles au regard direct chez les enfants atteints de TSA. À cette fin, nous avons combiné deux mesures : les réponses de conductance cutanée (RCC), une mesure robuste de l'activation, et l'asymétrie de l'activité électroencéphalographique (EEG) frontale, qui est associée aux tendances motivationnelles d'approche et d'évitement. Nous avons également exploré si le degré d'ouverture des yeux et la familiarité du visage modulaient ces réponses. MÉTHODES : Les réponses de conductance cutanée et l'activité EEG frontale ont été enregistrées chez 14 enfants atteints de TSA et 15 enfants au développement typique pendant qu'ils regardaient des visages familiers et non familiers aux yeux fermés, normalement ouverts ou grands ouverts. Les stimuli étaient présentés de manière à donner l'impression qu'ils se rapprochaient des enfants. RÉSULTATS : Chez les enfants au développement typique, il n'y avait pas de différences significatives de RCC entre les différentes conditions des yeux, tandis que dans le groupe TSA, les RCC étaient atténuées face aux visages aux yeux fermés et augmentaient en fonction du degré d'ouverture des yeux. Dans les deux groupes, les visages familiers suscitaient des RCC légèrement plus importantes que les visages non familiers. Chez les enfants au développement typique, les yeux normalement ouverts suscitaient une activité EEG frontale relative du côté gauche plus importante (associée à l'approche motivationnelle) que les yeux fermés et les yeux grands ouverts. Dans le groupe TSA, il n'y avait pas de différences significatives entre les conditions de regard concernant l'activité EEG frontale. CONCLUSIONS : Dans l'ensemble, les résultats reproduisent une observation antérieure en montrant une modulation atypique de l'activation en réponse au regard direct chez les enfants atteints de TSA, mais ne soutiennent pas l'hypothèse selon laquelle cette réponse est associée à une tendance motivationnelle d'évitement. Les enfants atteints de TSA pourraient plutôt manquer de la réponse motivationnelle normative liée à l'approche face au contact visuel.
