Résumé

Cette étude a examiné les perceptions de l'âge adulte chez 31 élèves du secondaire atteints d'un trouble du spectre de l'autisme (TSA). Nous avions deux objectifs de recherche : (a) présenter les attentes postsecondaires des élèves en matière d'études, de travail, d'amitiés et de modalités de logement et (b) décrire comment notre échantillon définissait l'âge adulte. Afin de mieux comparer les critères de l'âge adulte de notre échantillon avec les critères traditionnellement approuvés dans les écoles secondaires, nous avons utilisé une approche d'analyse de contenu dirigée. Les données provenaient d'un entretien semi-structuré qui interrogeait les élèves sur les amitiés, les activités et la transition vers l'âge adulte. La majorité des élèves s'attendaient à atteindre les marqueurs traditionnels de l'âge adulte après le secondaire. Pour certains, les parcours permettant d'atteindre ces résultats étaient définis de manière étroite et perçus comme un processus linéaire. L'indépendance, la maturité et la responsabilité personnelle étaient les caractéristiques de l'âge adulte les plus fortement approuvées, suivies de l'âge chronologique et des marqueurs traditionnels. Les implications pour la planification de la transition et les services destinés aux adultes sont examinées.

This study examined the perceptions of adulthood among 31 high-school students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We had two research aims: (a) to report students’ postsecondary expectations in terms of school, work, friendships, and living arrangement and (b) to describe how our sample defined adulthood. To better compare our sample’s criteria of adulthood with the criteria traditionally endorsed in secondary schools, we used a directed content analysis approach. Data were derived from a semi-structured interview that questioned students about friendships, activities, and the transition to adulthood. The majority of students expected to attain traditional markers of adulthood after high school. For some the pathways to achieving these outcomes were narrowly defined and perceived as a linear process. Independence, maturity, and personal responsibility were the most highly endorsed characteristics of adulthood, followed by chronological age and traditional markers. Implications for transition planning and adult services are discussed.
