Résumé Les problèmes de santé mentale et le suicide sont plus fréquents chez les adultes autistes que dans la population générale. La possession d’un chien peut améliorer le bien-être humain. Cette étude visait à élaborer un cadre des effets sur le bien-être des activités liées aux chiens chez les adultes autistes et à le comparer au cadre élaboré pour une population générale d’adultes. Trente-six propriétaires de chiens autistes (âgés de 18 à 74 ans, dont 18 hommes) issus de diverses régions du Royaume-Uni ont été interrogés et les transcriptions ont fait l’objet d’une analyse thématique. 16,7 % ont déclaré que leurs chiens les avaient empêchés de mettre fin à leurs jours, principalement en raison de l’affection du chien et de la nécessité de s’occuper de l’animal. Les interactions étroites entre le chien et son propriétaire (par exemple, les câlins, les promenades, la présence du chien) étaient les activités les plus fréquemment associées à une amélioration des émotions/de l’humeur et du fonctionnement dans la vie, tandis que les activités de type routinier (par exemple, nourrir l’animal) amélioraient particulièrement le fonctionnement dans la vie. La détérioration du bien-être était principalement liée aux problèmes de comportement du chien, à la mauvaise santé ou au décès du chien, et aux obligations envers le chien. Malgré certains aspects négatifs associés à la possession, avoir un chien pourrait améliorer le bien-être de nombreux adultes autistes et contribuer aux stratégies de prévention du suicide dans ce groupe à haut risque. Le cadre était cohérent avec celui élaboré précédemment, ce qui indique sa robustesse et la possibilité de se concentrer sur les activités liées aux chiens plutôt que sur le concept vague de « possession » lors de l’examen de l’impact de la possession sur le bien-être.
