Le trouble du spectre de l'autisme (TSA) est un handicap neurodéveloppemental, et des données récentes suggèrent que les adultes autistes sont plus susceptibles de développer la maladie d'Alzheimer (Alz) et d'autres démences que les adultes neurotypiques (NT). L'allèle ε4 du gène de l'apolipoprotéine E (APOE) est le facteur de risque génétique le plus important pour la maladie d'Alzheimer et affecte négativement la cognition chez les adultes d'âge moyen et plus âgés (MA+). Cette étude visait à déterminer l'impact de l'allèle APOE ε4 sur l'apprentissage verbal et la mémoire chez des adultes autistes MA+ (âgés de 40 à 71 ans), par comparaison avec des adultes NT appariés. À l'aide du test d'apprentissage verbal auditif (AVLT), nous avons constaté que les porteurs de ε4 obtenaient de moins bons résultats en mémoire à court terme et en apprentissage verbal dans les groupes diagnostiques, mais qu'il n'y avait pas d'interaction avec le diagnostic. Dans des analyses exploratoires au sein des groupes de sexe et de diagnostic, seuls les hommes autistes porteurs d'APOE ε4 présentaient un moins bon apprentissage verbal (p = 0,02), par rapport aux hommes autistes non porteurs. Enfin, l'allèle APOE ε4 n'a pas affecté significativement la mémoire à long terme dans cet échantillon. Ces résultats reproduisent des travaux antérieurs indiquant que l'allèle APOE ε4 affecte négativement la mémoire à court terme et l'apprentissage verbal chez les adultes MA+, et présentent de nouvelles constatations préliminaires selon lesquelles les hommes autistes MA+ pourraient être vulnérables aux effets d'APOE ε4 sur l'apprentissage verbal. De futurs travaux avec un échantillon plus large sont nécessaires pour déterminer si les femmes autistes pourraient également être vulnérables.
