Les personnes autistes sont présumées être caractérisées par une déficience cognitive, et leurs forces cognitives (p. ex., dans la performance au test de conception de blocs) sont fréquemment interprétées comme des sous-produits de bas niveau de déficits de haut niveau, et non comme des manifestations directes de l'intelligence. Les tentatives récentes visant à identifier la signature neuroanatomique et neurofonctionnelle de l'autisme se sont fondées sur cette hypothèse universelle, mais non testée. Nous avons donc évalué un large échantillon de 38 enfants autistes au moyen du test le plus éminent d'intelligence fluide, les Matrices progressives de Raven. Leurs scores étaient, en moyenne, de 30 points de percentile, et dans certains cas de plus de 70 points de percentile, supérieurs à leurs scores aux échelles d'intelligence de Wechsler. Les enfants témoins au développement typique ne présentaient pas un tel écart, et un contraste similaire a été observé lorsqu'un échantillon d'adultes autistes a été comparé à un échantillon d'adultes non autistes. Nous concluons que l'intelligence a été sous-estimée chez les personnes autistes.
