Résumé

Cet article utilise une approche autoethnographique évocatrice pour explorer l'expérience d'être une chercheuse de l'intérieur dans un contexte de recherche participative communautaire. Adoptant une perspective holistique et utilisant la forme du récit narratif, j'examine les dynamiques entre l'expérience généralement marginalisante (mais parfois habilitante) d'être une femme autiste et l'expérience généralement privilégiée (mais parfois oppressive) d'être une professionnelle de l'ingénierie, durant une période de bouleversement de carrière. Les thèmes des motivations et des mentors, de l'adversité provenant des services sociaux et du milieu universitaire, de l'appartenance, du caractère fuyant du positionnement intersectionnel, des cycles de rétroaction des opportunités, des dichotomies de compétence et d'inadéquation, des enjeux accrus, ainsi que du pouvoir et de la résistance sont explorés à travers le récit. Tout en laissant principalement le récit parler de lui-même conformément à l'approche qualitative adoptée, l'article se conclut par une discussion de la manière dont les expériences personnelles décrites se rapportent à la fois au travail plus large des chercheuses et chercheurs de l'intérieur dans les domaines liés au handicap, et aux idées fausses concernant l'autoréflexion et la capacité de raconter des histoires chez les personnes appartenant au spectre de l'autisme.

This article uses an evocative autoethnographic approach to explore the experience of being an insider-researcher in a community-based participatory research setting. Taking a holistic perspective and using the form of narrative story-telling, I examine the dynamics between the typically marginalizing (but sometimes empowering) experience of being an autistic woman and the typically privileging (but sometimes oppressive) experience of being an engineering professional, during a time of career upheaval. Themes of motivations and mentors, adversity from social services and the academy, belonging, the slipperiness of intersectional positioning, feedback cycles of opportunity, dichotomies of competence and inadequacy, heightened stakes, and power and resistance are explored through the narrative. While primarily leaving the narrative to speak for itself per the qualitative approach taken, the article concludes with a discussion of how the personal experiences described relate both to the broader work of insider-researchers within disability-related fields, and to misconceptions about self-reflection and capacity for story-telling in individuals on the autism spectrum.
