Abstract
Through this chapter, we hope to contribute to a better understanding of the subject. ‘Intolerance’ and the role of both certainty and uncertainty in the lives of autistic CYP are first explored and reframed. Next, the setting of a school environment is used to identify potential daily uncertainties for autistic CYP, and the impact of unpredictability on their levels of anxiety, juxtaposed with the requirement to self-regulate their emotions. Clinicians are invited to be curious about the causes of uncertainty, and whether viewing uncertainty through an autistic lens changes how autistic CYP are supported. Three key suggestions are made for professionals wishing to reframe intolerance of uncertainty to safety in predictability. This chapter ends with a case study and exercise to encourage reflection on the main points.
