Résumé

Selon certains groupes de non-spécialistes, le pays connaît une épidémie d’autisme — une escalade rapide de la prévalence de l’autisme pour des raisons inconnues. Toutefois, aucune preuve scientifique solide n’indique que le nombre croissant de cas diagnostiqués d’autisme découle d’autre chose que d’un élargissement volontaire des critères diagnostiques, associé à une sensibilisation du public délibérément accrue et à une détection des cas intentionnellement améliorée. Pourquoi la perception du public est-elle si déconnectée des données scientifiques ? Dans cet article, nous examinons trois sources principales de malentendu : le manque de sensibilisation à l’évolution des critères diagnostiques, l’acceptation non critique d’une conclusion tirée de manière illogique dans une étude menée en Californie, et l’inattention à une caractéristique cruciale des données de « décompte des enfants » communiquées chaque année par le ministère américain de l’Éducation.

According to some lay groups, the nation is experiencing an autism epidemic-a rapid escalation in the prevalence of autism for unknown reasons. However, no sound scientific evidence indicates that the increasing number of diagnosed cases of autism arises from anything other than purposely broadened diagnostic criteria, coupled with deliberately greater public awareness and intentionally improved case finding. Why is the public perception so disconnected from the scientific evidence? In this article we review three primary sources of misunderstanding: lack of awareness about the changing diagnostic criteria, uncritical acceptance of a conclusion illogically drawn in a California-based study, and inattention to a crucial feature of the "child count" data reported annually by the U.S. Department of Education.
