L’auteur est autiste. L’autisme est une caractéristique qui entraîne une concentration univariable, ainsi que des manières et un humour inhabituels. Ces caractéristiques ont conduit l’auteur à subir des violences psychologiques et physiques par le passé. L’auteur travaille désormais comme défenseur afin de contribuer à rendre justice aux victimes de tels crimes de haine liés au handicap. Cet article s’appuie sur des données académiques et des témoignages récents de victimes anonymisées pour soutenir que, quelle que soit la démarche entreprise pour accéder à la justice, les victimes rencontrent toujours des difficultés. Le signalement par des tiers, les plaintes auprès de la police et le devoir de diligence censément assuré par les organismes locaux sont fréquemment inefficaces pour soutenir les personnes handicapées qui cherchent à signaler un crime après avoir été victimes des préjugés d’autrui. En conclusion, l’auteur révèle toutefois un certain nombre de techniques adoptées par des victimes handicapées afin de s’assurer qu’elles sont entendues par des organismes souvent peu disposés à fournir aide et soutien.
