Résumé

Les personnes autistes peuvent présenter un risque plus élevé de troubles de santé mentale périnatale, étant donné que l’autisme et les troubles de santé mentale coexistent fréquemment et que les personnes autistes font face à des facteurs de stress supplémentaires, tels que des obstacles à l’accès à des soins de maternité appropriés. Cette étude a examiné le stress, la dépression, l’anxiété et la satisfaction à l’égard de la vie autodéclarés au cours du troisième trimestre de la grossesse (n = 27 femmes autistes ; n = 25 femmes non autistes), 2 à 3 mois après la naissance (n = 24 femmes autistes ; n = 26 femmes non autistes) et 6 mois après la naissance (n = 22 femmes autistes ; n = 29 femmes non autistes). La confiance parentale autodéclarée et les styles parentaux ont été examinés 6 mois après la naissance. Les participantes autistes ont obtenu des scores significativement plus élevés que les participantes non autistes en matière de stress, de dépression et d’anxiété sur l’ensemble des points temporels, bien qu’aucune différence entre les groupes n’ait été observée pour la satisfaction à l’égard de la vie. Les scores d’anxiété ont significativement diminué au fil du temps pour les deux groupes. Aucune différence entre les groupes n’a été constatée concernant la confiance parentale, ni l’anxiété parentale, la bienveillance, l’implication ou la routine parentales, bien que le groupe autiste ait obtenu des scores plus faibles en discipline parentale. Les résultats soulignent la nécessité d’un dépistage et d’un soutien efficaces concernant les troubles de santé mentale périnatale chez les personnes autistes. Les professionnels travaillant avec des parents autistes devraient savoir que les parents autistes et non autistes déclarent être tout aussi susceptibles d’adopter des comportements parentaux positifs tels que la bienveillance et l’implication. Résumé grand public Les personnes autistes peuvent rencontrer des difficultés pendant la grossesse et après avoir accouché, par exemple des difficultés à obtenir des soins de santé répondant à leurs besoins. Les personnes autistes peuvent donc avoir un bien-être moindre que les personnes non autistes au cours de cette période. Nous avons demandé à des personnes autistes et non autistes de remplir des questionnaires mesurant le stress, la dépression, l’anxiété et la satisfaction à l’égard de la vie. Il leur a été demandé de le faire une fois pendant la grossesse, une fois 2 à 3 mois après avoir accouché et une fois 6 mois après avoir accouché. Six mois après avoir accouché, elles ont également rempli des questionnaires sur la parentalité. Les parents autistes avaient des scores de stress, de dépression et d’anxiété plus élevés que les parents non autistes. Pour les deux groupes, les scores d’anxiété ont diminué au fil du temps. Aucune différence entre les groupes n’a été observée concernant la satisfaction à l’égard de leur vie ou leur degré de confiance en tant que parent. Aucune différence entre les groupes n’a été observée dans la plupart des domaines du style parental, bien que les parents autistes aient obtenu des scores plus faibles en discipline parentale. Cette étude suggère que les personnes autistes peuvent être davantage stressées, déprimées et anxieuses que les personnes non autistes pendant la grossesse et après avoir accouché. Les personnes autistes ont donc besoin d’un soutien de bonne qualité pendant cette période. Cette étude suggère également que les parents autistes et non autistes peuvent être tout aussi susceptibles d’exercer leur parentalité de manière positive, par exemple en étant sensibles aux besoins de leur bébé.

Autistic people may be at higher risk of perinatal mental health conditions, given that autism and mental health conditions commonly co-occur and that autistic people face additional stressors such as barriers to appropriate maternity care. This study explored self-reported stress, depression, anxiety and satisfaction with life during the third trimester of pregnancy (n = 27 autistic women; n = 25 non-autistic women), 2 to 3 months after birth (n = 24 autistic women; n = 26 non-autistic women) and 6 months after birth (n = 22 autistic women; n = 29 non-autistic women). Self-reported parenting confidence and parenting styles were explored at 6 months after birth. Autistic participants scored significantly higher than non-autistic participants on stress, depression and anxiety across the time-points as a whole, although there were no group differences for satisfaction with life. Anxiety scores significantly decreased over time for both groups. No group differences were found for parenting confidence nor parenting anxiety, nurturance, involvement or routine, although the autistic group scored lower on parenting discipline. The findings highlight the need for effective screening and support for perinatal mental health conditions for autistic people. Professionals working with autistic parents should be aware that autistic and non-autistic parents report being equally likely to engage in positive parenting behaviours such as nurturance and involvement. Lay abstract Autistic people can have difficulties during pregnancy and after giving birth, such as difficulty getting health care that meets their needs. Autistic people may therefore have lower well-being than non-autistic people during this time. We asked autistic and non-autistic people to fill in questionnaires measuring stress, depression, anxiety and satisfaction with life. They were asked to do this once during pregnancy, once 2 to 3 months after giving birth and once 6 months after giving birth. At 6 months after giving birth, they also filled in questionnaires about parenting. The autistic parents had higher stress, depression and anxiety scores than the non-autistic parents. For both groups, scores for anxiety went down over time. There were no differences between the groups on satisfaction with their life or how confident they were as a parent. There were no differences between the groups on most areas of parenting style, although autistic parents scored lower on parenting discipline. This study suggests that autistic people may be more stressed, depressed and anxious than non-autistic people during pregnancy and after giving birth. Autistic people therefore need good quality support during this time. This study also suggests that autistic and non-autistic parents may be just as likely to parent in positive ways such as being sensitive to their baby’s needs.
