L’étude du rôle de la puberté dans le développement des fonctions exécutives (FE) est importante pour comprendre comment la maturation et les changements qui y sont liés peuvent avoir une incidence sur les systèmes neuronaux sous-jacents aux FE chez les adolescents autistes (AT). Des études documentent des différences de FE liées à l’âge chronologique chez les jeunes AT, mais l’incidence de la puberté est insuffisamment étudiée. Nous avons examiné le rôle du statut pubertaire transversal (indices surrénalien et gonadique de la Pubertal Development Scale), du statut d’autisme et du sexe assigné à la naissance sur les FE rapportées par les parents (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function : inhibition, flexibilité, mémoire de travail) chez des jeunes AT et non autistes (NA). Nous avons émis l’hypothèse que les jeunes AT, en particulier les filles, présenteraient davantage de problèmes de FE à la fin de la puberté que les jeunes NA. Les garçons et les filles AT ainsi que les filles NA à la fin de la puberté présentaient moins de problèmes de flexibilité que les jeunes prépubères, tandis que les garçons NA à la fin de la puberté présentaient davantage de problèmes de flexibilité que les garçons NA prépubères. Il n’y avait pas de différences significatives selon le sexe assigné ou la puberté dans la mémoire de travail pour le développement surrénalien, ni dans aucun domaine des FE pour le développement gonadique. Les résultats suggèrent que la puberté surrénalienne contribue à la flexibilité et pourrait favoriser certains domaines des FE chez les jeunes AT. Des recherches longitudinales utilisant diverses mesures de la puberté et des FE sont nécessaires pour clarifier ces résultats.
