Abstract
In this chapter, I, as an autistic actor-trainer, examine the work of neurodiversity scholar Nick Walker to propose what a neurocosmopolitan approach to actor training might look like. This research follows on from research into training actors with dyslexia and dyspraxia, such as that undertaken by Daron Oram, Petronilla Whitfield, and Deborah Leveroy, and moves to address the absence of writing on training autistic actors and widen the conversation on neurodiversity and actor training. I ask not only what access issues neurodivergent students face within actor training, but also how embracing ideas from neurodiversity theory can shift how we think about the uses these methods serve, and how they can be enhanced for all students. By considering neurodivergent students’ accounts of their own strengths and challenges, I suggest examples of forms a neurocosmopolitan approach to acting could take.
