Abstract

This chapter stresses the need for change while it demystifies what change can look like by offering examples of good practices such as validating the account of lived experience and sensory accommodations. Readers will also consider how to ensure that the workforce is knowledgeable about both autism and mental health difficulties, understanding the unique challenges associated with being a young autistic person with mental health problems, and showing genuine concern for young people’s well-being. To encourage reflection, this chapter includes vignettes of autistic young people about their experience of accessing mental health services via CAMHS; emphasising, for example, issues associated with accessibility and engagement, help-seeking behaviours, and relationships with professionals.
