Abstract
Increased awareness and prevalence of autism in the past few decades has driven a rapid increase in autism research. In this chapter, we discussed the latest trends in autism research with regards to publications, funding, frameworks, and methodology, using systematic review and meta-analyses, as well as overviews of research from key funding agencies. We also presented common theoretical approaches used within autism research, such as the medical, social, and human rights models of disability. Next, we examined current critical gaps in autism research, spanning from educational outcomes, to demographic characteristic representation, and issues relating to mental health of autistic individuals. We also offered suggestions on where the field needs to go in order to fill these gaps and better meet the needs of educators, autistic individuals and their families. Lastly, we conclude with deliberations of the tensions that exist within the community on where autism research should be heading towards.
