How we use Dimensions

The team uses an internal tool based on Dimensions to find articles that may contain statements about autistic authorship. This page describes that tool and its current search criteria. It is one way to find publications for the project; the other sources and ways of adding publications are described on the Information sources page.

From a search match to an examination

The tool combines two questions: does the title or abstract contain terms related to autism, and does the indexed text contain wording that could refer to autistic authorship? Expressions are organized into groups, from more targeted statements to more exploratory formulations.

Examples include an explicit statement that an author is autistic, a first-person description of an autistic researcher, or a collective statement about the authors. Other groups look for nearby words or positionality statements, where researchers explain how their experiences and positions relate to their work.

A match proposes an article for examination. It does not automatically include the publication in the project or identify any person as autistic.

What is searched, and what is checked?

The current tool searches records classified as articles by Dimensions. The expressions below contain the title-or-abstract condition followed by the other search conditions. Article type and the relevant date limits are applied separately.

Dimensions can search text indexed for an article even when that text cannot be read directly in its interface. Coverage is incomplete, and a match does not guarantee access to the publication. Its title-and-abstract search also covers some additional indexed terms. AutiHub therefore checks the returned title and abstract themselves before retaining a thematic match for examination. The displayed expressions use the search syntax entered by the team. Quotation marks group phrases; AND combines requirements; OR offers alternatives; an asterisk extends a word stem. A value such as ~2 or ~4 allows proximity variations within a phrase. This is a search-engine rule, not a test of what the sentence means. Expressions retain their original wording in both language versions of this page.

Why is human review essential?

An article may mention autistic participants, quote another person, or describe an advisory team without saying that an author is autistic. Reviewers examine the passage in context and distinguish named autistic authors, autistic authors not individually identified, and other contributors who are not authors. Only the first two situations meet the project's autistic-authorship requirement.

When assessing whether a passage identifies an author as autistic, reviewers refer to what was written in the original language and its context. A translation can help them understand the passage, but an automatic translation alone should not settle an ambiguous statement. If the meaning remains unclear, the case should remain open for further review or clarification.

Review also checks that the work concerns autism. Unclear cases can remain to be completed or reviewed, including when the full publication is unavailable. A keyword match is not sufficient evidence on its own. Read how the project documents autistic authorship.

Manual searches and ongoing monitoring

The team can run searches across earlier publications or a selected period. When enabled, nightly monitoring looks for newly indexed records in Dimensions: an older publication added recently can therefore be found. Overlapping periods and additional checks help accommodate delayed information, but cannot guarantee that every later change will be detected.

Repeated searches recognize publications already encountered and preserve earlier review decisions. The requests are paced and processed progressively to respect service limits. Monitoring assists the team; newly found articles still require examination.

Understanding priorities and limitations

The groups below show the criteria currently configured for new searches. Lower priority numbers indicate groups examined first. They do not measure the probability that an author is autistic or the quality of a publication. More exploratory groups may find additional relevant work, but also more unrelated matches.

Wording evolves as the team learns from results. Language, terminology, missing abstracts and uneven full-text indexing can all leave relevant work undiscovered. Earlier searches may have used different criteria, and this method should not be interpreted as exhaustive.

Search for an assertion about an author or coauthor. Additions use a complete grammatical construction: has/have, was/were diagnosed, is/are, or identifies/identify. No positionality marker is required.

Search for a self-description attached to a role already allowed in V2. The as…, I am… and we are… variants keep the role and identity wording in one exact phrase. Asperger and ASD use with rather than being mechanically substituted as adjectives.

Identity close to an authorship term (~2)

Search for a local identity mention near an authorship role, with a mandatory positionality/reflexivity marker in the document. AuDHD is searched in both orders at ~2. Asperger and ASD retain a diagnosis or complete assertion; spectrum wording remains tightly constrained.
