Il a été rapporté dans la littérature académique que les personnes neurodivergentes ne ressentent pas toujours un sentiment d'appartenance au sein des congrégations religieuses. Des travaux antérieurs ont souligné que certaines personnes neurodivergentes peuvent être stigmatisées et/ou exclues dans des contextes congrégationnels. Cependant, peu d'attention a été accordée à la manière dont les personnes neurodivergentes appartiennent aux congrégations, en particulier du point de vue neurodivergent. En utilisant une méthodologie autoethnographique, j'interroge mon propre récit personnel d'appartenance au sein d'espaces congrégationnels. J'ai combiné la théorie de la stigmatisation sociale de Goffman et la théorisation de la stigmatisation sociale de Scambler afin d'examiner une expérience neurodivergente au sein de congrégations religieuses et d'explorer l'interface entre le fait d'être neurodivergent et le fait de ressentir un sentiment d'appartenance dans une congrégation religieuse. Cette autoethnographie met en évidence que la gestion des impressions (en particulier le passing et le masking) est centrale aux sentiments d'appartenance et de manque d'appartenance que j'ai éprouvés. La manière dont l'église est « pratiquée » semble également influencer les sentiments d'appartenance, les normes dans les églises mentionnées dans le récit étant souvent façonnées par la normalité.
