Abstract

Adulthood is often framed in an ableist, time-constricted demand construct. Dena L. Gassner highlights the risk factors for autistics as they journey into adulthood, providing a new framework for adulthood that changes the notion of “independence” to “interdependence,” and suggests that we no longer think of this period of time as “launching” so much as creating a ramp toward adulthood. She notes the goal should be to foster interdependence and a collaborative capacity so that the autistic person can learn to ask for and receive support from someone other than parents, teachers, and support staff. Gassner indicates that we should be teaching young adults to ask for help in a timely manner, to navigate systems, and to know their rights to access programs such as Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR). She encourages patience for both clients and their families, refusing to engage in the ableist narrative that so clearly does not work for individuals with autism.
