Abstract

This chapter is a personal account on trauma and the importance of a trauma-informed approach in therapy. It introduces readers to the ongoing adversity autistic CYP may face in their daily lives, whether that is from parents reacting negatively to a diagnosis or struggles throughout school (e.g., bullying, ostracism, academic problems); these factors may have a cumulative effect on autistic CYP. Such trauma may lead to dissociation, meaning that talking therapy can be very difficult. The author is providing professionals with tips on validating and affirming autistic experiences and top takeaways on how to develop trust, choice, and agency, and work together to co-produce healing.
