Abstract
Traditional psychotherapeutic approaches often fail to meet the cognitive and emotional needs of autistic individuals, particularly due to their lack of recognition of masking behaviours and reliance on verbal social-emotional processing. Schema therapy offers a structured and predictable framework that may better align with autistic processing styles. Eight participants took part in semi-structured interviews, analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), and enriched by the Japanese concept of junsui keiken (pure experience). Findings reveal an increased self-awareness, improved emotion regulation, and reinforcement of the ‘healthy adult’ mode. Cultural and neurodiversity-informed adaptations were crucial to therapeutic success. The study advocates for neurodiversityaffirming and culturally sensitive adaptations to schema therapy.
