Abstract
This chapter reviews past research on the experiences of nonbinary autistic young people, focusing on their experiences of identity growing up and at school. It explores this subject through five themes. ‘Stability and change’ and ‘A search for meaning’, explore experiences of being autistic and nonbi- nary during childhood and adolescence. Experiences in the context of the school are then considered through the themes, ‘Challenges at the intersection of autism and nonbinary gender’, ‘School support’ and ‘Autistic joy and gender euphoria’, including experiences of intersectional struggles, examples of supports in school, and positive experiences at school. The chapter emphasizes that nonbinary autistic individuals have unique experiences not fully explored in previous studies, underscoring the need for more research on their school experiences.
