Abstract
This chapter specifically focuses on autistic children and young people (CYP) from global majority ethnic backgrounds and have mental health difficulties. It explores some of the specific issues that CYP from minority ethnic communities and their families could face in terms of receiving a mental health diagnosis and accessing appropriate services. The authors are using a mixture of identity-first and person-first language in this chapter. This approach is to represent the views of CYP with multiple identities who sometimes prefer their other identities, such as ethnicity, religion, or sexuality, to be more prominent and consider them to be more important than their autistic identity. This chapter ends with key points that clinicians should consider in their work, in particular cultural awareness training and cross-cultural communication. They also offer examples of key aspects of a multicultural orientation framework while considering an experience-sensitive approach focusing on the uniqueness of each person.
