Abstract
This is an essential book for all social workers. Autism is often hidden, not just because there are no visible signs of it, but because in some cases diagnosis is missed or comes in adulthood, and in others, co-existing conditions such as learning disability can cause professionals to prioritise that as the focus for attention. But autistic people will be found in every area of social work practice, diagnosed or not and making the effort to understand the world from the autistic person’s experience of it will help in any number of situations. As Dunn points out, the adage that ‘good social work is good social work. Diagnosis doesn’t matter’ has been seen not to work if you replace ‘diagnosis’ with ‘ethnicity’ or ‘culture’, and many autistic people understand their position as similarly outside of non-autistic experiences.
