Abstract
The experiences of transgender and gender-diverse Autistic people is a growing area of academic interest. Gender-diverse identities have been estimated to be twice as common in Autistic individuals; however, current research mostly focuses on “prevalence” rates with a focus on gender dysphoric and formally identified Autistic people, which overlooks many of us who live outside of these experiences. This chapter explores the pathology paradigm in current transgender Autistic work and how this can add to the stigma and oppression of gender-diverse Autistic people. It then explores the importance of the neurodiversity paradigm and how we can (and should) shift to this from the pathology paradigm. This chapter creates recommendations on how we can continue to create meaningful and appropriate gender-diverse Autistic research, which can benefit our communities.
