Abstract

In 2008, the United Nations officially proclaimed 2 April as “World Autism Awareness Day” highlighting the need to improve quality of life for all autistic people. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognises the diversity of autism as a neurodevelopmental condition which often manifests as differences in social interaction, communication, behaviour and interests. Although 1 in 160 people are autistic, many experience stigma, discrimination and human rights violations due to a lack of public awareness on a global scale (WHO, 2022).
