Abstract

Understanding how autistic bodies work physiologically and neurologically, and understanding the specific psycho-social factors and environments that impact autistic children and young people is imperative to understand what causes the high prevalence of low mood, shutdown, and burnout this group experiences and can aid us in discerning between them. Therapeutically, autistic children and young people are often unwittingly victim-blamed, with the centring of issues within them, and the assumption that they are responding irrationally to, and should have the autonomy to exert influence over, narratives that are beyond their control. Written from the perspective of an autistic trainer, consultant, researcher, and parent; and an experienced clinical psychologist; this chapter explores those contexts, before discussing how to best therapeutically interpret those experiences and consider how therapists can validate, contextualise, and navigate these experiences, within the context of CBT and Interpersonal Therapy.
