Abstract
This chapter serves as a critical memoir/counternarrative reflection of the author’s personal and professional journey as a gay, autistic academic who conducts research (and has participated in studies) on these intersectional identities. Through illustrating various experiences and roles across his college career, the author exposes the reconciliation and rewards associated with engaging in “me-search”—a term scholars sometimes use pejoratively to critique the blurring of strict insider/outsider boundaries in research. Along the way, he draws on personal journals, memos, and researcher notes to scaffold stories and relay lessons learned on becoming an academic with underexplored minoritized identities. Among the main themes that emerged in a study he co-wrote included the following: facing challenges in navigating identities within student organizations; seeking community in online spaces; engaging in passing behaviors; and expressing identities complexly, if not inconsistently. The author describes that through reflecting on his journey, these topics have similarly been core aspects of his experiences.
