Abstract

To systematically identify and synthesise qualitative studies exploring how autism is conceptualised, interpreted, and made meaningful within lay (non-expert) populations. To develop a meta-ethnographic synthesis of lay social representations of autism, examining dominant beliefs, narratives, explanatory models, and cultural meanings. To generate higher-order interpretative insights, informed by Social Representation Theory, into how collective understandings of autism are constructed and communicated within everyday discourse.
