Abstract

Overall objective of the review is: to synthesise observational evidence in children and adolescents (<18 years) on (a) the association between ADHD and/or autism and exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)/traumatic events, and (b) the association between trauma exposure and PTSD outcomes among youth with ADHD and/or autism. Specific questions that will be asked are: Is the diagnosis of or elevated levels of ADHD and/or autism associated with greater frequency and/or intensity of exposures to adverse childhood experiences or traumatic events? Do ADHD and autism differ from one another in terms of the type, frequency, and intensity of exposures to adverse childhood experiences or traumatic events? Do differences in frequency and intensity of exposures to adverse childhood experiences or traumatic events differ as a function of sex/age? Are the rates of PTSD higher in autism and/or ADHD than in the general population? Is the likelihood that an adverse childhood event or traumatic event will lead to PTSD symptoms higher for autism than ADHD, compared to the general population or those with trait levels?
