Abstract

"I know that I exist, the question is: what is this ‘I’ that I know?" (Rene Descartes). Notions of personality, selfhood and identity have been debated and analysed throughout human history by ancient philosophers through to postmodernist social theorists. A bewildering array of ideas have been formulated to help people come to terms with who they are, their position in the social world, and their aspirations for the future.
