Abstract
I am an anaesthetist; I am also autistic. From as far back as I can remember I have always felt ‘different’, which is an experience common to late diagnosed autistic adults.1 It wasn’t until my son was diagnosed with autism that I realised that I also view the world through the same autistic lens, and that I have had to deal with the same challenges as he has. The greatest difficulty of an undiagnosed autistic adult is not knowing what we are dealing with, not knowing why things seem so difficult, or why other people seem so odd. Now that I understand it, life is so much better and I love being autistic.
