Abstract

This chapter features a mother and her adult autistic son who give personal accounts of their experiences at different points in life. Julie shares overcoming obstacles raising Jean-Paul at a time when autism was viewed as caused by cold, non-loving mothers and educational options were limited. She describes aspects of family life and educational experiences over the years. Complementing Julie’s personal perspective, Jean-Paul gives an account of his adult life describing how his intense area of special interest (which began in childhood) eventually led to his success in earning a higher degree and finding employment in a related field. He further describes his successes as a renowned self-advocate, as well as becoming a husband and father of two children.
