Abstract

Given the concerning rise of self-harm and suicidality in the autistic population, this review will seek to synthesise existing research to answer the following research questions, based upon the autism community's top 10 priorities for suicide prevention: What do we know about the experiences of autistic people who self-harm and the factors that lead to this? What do studies that capture the autistic voice tell us about the purpose/function of self-harming in this population? What are the experiences of autistic people accessing support for self-harm/suicidality (including crisis support), and the barriers they face to seeking help? What are the specific risk and protective factors for self-harm and suicide in autism across the lifespan? How well can these findings be explained by The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide and The Social Identity Theory?
